Saul vs. Henry

So the tripwire.com landed a interview with Henry Rollins, and they chose none other than Saul Williams to conduct it. Thats a pretty tight match-up. The interview is somewhat long, so you'll need some time and patience, and you probably can't read it at work if your boss constantly breathes on top of your dome. It gets good about halfway through, and some of the first questions eventually start to make more sense.
Overall, they touch upon some of the cliche questions, such as politics, bush, pop culture and having a love life, but they get introspective about topics like humanity, poetry, manhood, moshing, civilization, the youth, music sub-cultures and subconcious uprise, or something like that......
We definitely recommend checking it out!

So, two websites that pitch somewhat of a different message inspired me to write this. Actually, I think if you really read into their statements and editorial, than you will most likely find out that American society and its mainstream culture (which sometimes feels like an anomaly) has been either saturated by corporate branding, or, that public discourse is thirsty for even more branded culture and materialism.
Shit, I won't lie, I've fallen victim to some dope brands, and have been addicted to material culture. Although I think trying to find a balance is key. Being aware of where products are made, and how they are made is important. I would assume that everyone's lifestyle and culture, or sub-culture, or counter-culture, or whatever the fuck you want to call that stuff, is made up of some copy and paste, branding, and aesthetic influences. Its nuts how all these fashion, technology, music, film, book, blogs, tv, radio, podcast.....and so on, are fed upon lots of this branded culture.

Its been an interesting phenomenon, and will only get more interesting and comlex!

Miami 2006

So Miami 2006 is in the books. Weather was quite odd this year. It was about 50 degrees on most nights! Plus, it rained on the OM bbq-bummer. Oh well. OM hip hop artists still killed it and gave their all. I think hightlights of the conference were: Bugz in the attic vs. Jazzanova @ Sobe live. Shit was off the hinges....believe this! And Jamie Lidell put on a jaw dropping show. Dude is like a one man electronic soul eating show. The BBE/Rapster poolside joint was fun with jazzy jeff, language, jazzanova, bobbito and others; Music could have been louder there, but noise violations are strictly enforced when it comes to outdoors jawns in Miami. Of course, there was some superficiality and pretentious stuff that always comes along with Miami, you just have to ignore that crap. Missed some cool panels that went on with coldcut, maseo, gilles peterson and more, but I'm trying to hunt down podcast recorded versions of them! Below are pictures and videos from some nights in the links below. Thanks to the fellow OM'ies and everyone that made the experience that much better!

SXSW and "Stoned"

Check out Blastyojaw's blog on this years SWSX. It was his first time down in Austin with The FADER cru, and his new saying is "whut it dew breh!" Don't know what the fuck that means though. I think some southern hip hop heads say that ish.

Also going to see a special advanced screening of "Stoned" the movie tonight with some of the Diaspora folks. Guess its about the dude that founded the Rolling Stones band and his rise to stardom, but then getting booted from the band and OD'ing years later. Dang.

Soulstice reunite

Saw soulstice reunite for one show last week at 111 minna.
The band sounded good, and the lead singer Gina was swell on the mic (except for the occasional feedback)
Soulstice formed a distinct sound and fanbase in the late 90's, and also helped shape OM.

Some of us Diaspora folks had the privilege to share dinner last night with the eccentric and kind hearted crew of the local HRC (Housing Rights Committe) of San Fran. Jess volunteers for them a few days a week while she spends her time away from all the classroom verbage of law school.
If you live and rent in San Fran (which most modest folks probably do, since homeowning is nearly impossible in the bay!) than we recommend you give these people at the HRC a visit if you ever have problems with a landlord.

Counseling for tenants about their leagal rights is free and open to the public. Walk-ins welcome Mon. thru Thurs 1-5pm...!
[They're also the only free tenant rights organization that helps with subsidized housing and section 8] www.hrcsf.org

This year features acts and DJ's like Krush, Coldcut, Jamie Lidell, Jazzanova, Bugz in the Attic (live exclusive shiet!), Gilles Peterson, and OM is hosting a hot ass bbq with some dope sets including a mushroom jazz set by Farina. Lots of other cool multimedia events, panels and discussions will also go down about the state of the industry....
